Sights and attractions in the regions:
The Thracian cult complex near the village of Starosel is a world famous archaeological site. It consists of two Thracian temples dug under a mound. In 2000, Georgi Kitov came across the main temple (dating back to the 5th century BC), which is located in Chetinova Mogila. In 2002, the world saw the only heroin tomb with a colonnade, located in the Horizon mound.
Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria. It is over 8,000 years old and its past can be traced from prehistory to the present day. Life in the city has not been interrupted, which ranks it among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Ancient monuments have been preserved and conserved, and many cultural events are held in the city.
The southern fortress gate is the main gate of the Roman city of Diocletianopolis. The road to Philippopolis (Plovdiv) – the most important administrative centre in the Roman province of Thrace – began right here. The original gate is 13m high. It is known as the “camels” because at the beginning of the 20th century the door was divided and resembled two camels standing opposite each other.
